The Health Benefits of Physical Activity

Physical activity is essential for good health and contributes to positive well-being. Many of the leading causes of disease and disability - such as coronary heart disease, strokes and type 2 diabetes - are associated with physical inactivity. There are a number of reasons why taking part in regular moderate intensity physical
activity is beneficial to your health. These include:

Feeling good
Reduce Stress
Improve sleep
Improve mobility
Weight control
Increase energy
Reduce blood pressure
Reduce risk of disease

The Chief Medical Officer recommends that everyone should be physically active for 30 minutes a day on at least 5 days of the week. For non-active people or beginners to physical activity (DOH, 2004) - 30 minutes a day can be broken down into 3 x 10 minutes a day. For example:

10-minute brisk walk to the shops
10-minute vigorous housework
10-minute stair climbing

However, ideally people should build their physical activity levels up to a continuous 30-minute period.

What is Moderate Intensity Physical Activity?

Everyone's moderate intensity level is different. However there are particular signs that indicate people are working at the right level.

The signs are:

Breathe a little faster
Feel a little bit warmer
Feel your heart beating a little faster
Light sweating
Flushed skin colour

The main point to remember is that a person feels comfortable and that they are still able to TALK.

As we increasingly live busier and busier lives we now find it more difficult to look after our well-being, including physical activity, diet and health. The Healthy Workplace Challenge is a great way to incoroporate physical activity into your daily routine!

Benefits of a healthy workforce include:
· Fewer absences
· Greater effectiveness
· Increased productivity
· Healthier and happier workforce
